Student Profile: Flooding the LRLR church

by Dan Chua

Sam Webster is currently a 4th Year Arts Honours student. During his time in the EU, he has developed a concern for global mission, particularly for those who are less reached by the gospel or less resourced (LRLR). He has since taken the opportunity to serve as a leader in the kids program at Living Water Fellowship, Redfern.

How did you hear about this opportunity and what prompted you to seek it out?

Sam Webster: James Mittelstadt, an EU senior staff, posted on Facebook that Living Water was looking for people to help out. Ministry to the LRLR had been on my heart for a long time. I attended CMS Summer School for many years and frequented the EU’s Next Steps conference (an event designed to engage students with LRLR opportunities). God used those periods of extended focus on the un-reached places around the world, to move me to consider what He could do through me to further the gospel. When I saw the Facebook post, it felt like God was prompting me to act on what He had already emotionally convinced me of.

How has the EU helped you move forward in serving the LRLR?

Sam: Alan Mugridge spoke at Next Steps 2015, and one of his talks delivered a catalogue of ways in which you could serve in an LRLR church. I was struck multiple times by certain roles that I could vividly imagine myself in. It was a gentle push to consider future ministry. People were moved towards a mentality like, “God willing, in two to three years, I could be living and serving in an LRLR area”.

How can we be praying for you as you serve the LRLR?

Sam: Please pray that the Holy Spirit will be at work in the Indigenous communities of Glebe and Redfern, and that he will be drawing these people toward Him. Ask that God would use his people to love and support the vulnerable in these communities, particularly children. Finally, please ask God to continue to grow and shape me in the likeness of his Son, and that I would be able to preach the gospel faithfully at Living Water.

Please pray for Sam and others in the EU who have been challenged to prayerfully consider serving the LRLR. Give thanks to God for answering our prayers that through the EU Graduates Fund, students like Sam are flooding God’s LRLR church in Sydney, Australia and beyond.
