Rowan’s Update – April 2026

Open Hearts, Open Doors

I write this with Easter approaching. For most of USYD’s students and staff, Easter is merely the start of their mid-semester break with no spiritual significance. What a tragedy! No knowledge of Jesus’ ransom for sins and his wondrous defeat of death! In response, for many years, the EU has sought to leverage the Easter break to heighten its evangelism. This week, I have had to privilege of preaching evangelistically at four EU Public Meetings, and one Easter service for USYD academics, staff and research students. It has been a joy to see visiting students and staff in attendance engaging with the gospel of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Many EU faculties have also been busy this semester holding their own evangelistic opportunities. The EU group at the Conservatorium ran a conversation table. The weekly EU stall on main campus gave away Bibles. Other faculties gave away hot-cross buns and sought to engage fellow students with the gospel.

The general feedback has been that there are many on campus who are interested to find out more about the Lord Jesus. One student at the Conservatorium took a Bible saying she thought she should read it because the Christian Bible has had such an impact on classical music. Another student spoke to me after a Public Meeting saying he disagreed that God could be good given the amount of suffering in the world, but that he was very interested in what had been said and was keen to come back.

My reflection: what an amazing gift of God that we have such an open door for the gospel at Sydney Uni! As usual there have been various challenges, from difficulties securing room bookings to IT issues. However, the door remains open to proclaim Christ, we are seeing an openness in people’s hearts to Jesus’ gospel, and the Lord keeps growing the EU in number (we’ve seen our highest attendance at Public Meetings in years).

Thank you for your partnership in prayer and through financial generosity, to see Christ Jesus made known at Sydney Uni. To our God be the glory.

Our ‘Ministry Support Fund’ has not yet reached its target for the year, and we would value your help. This fund is vital in supporting our Senior Staff and the wider EU GradsFund ministry, covering essential costs such as administration, office expenses, insurance, and staff training. If you are able to give, your support would make a real difference in helping us meet these needs. Please consider supporting us via the instructions below.
