Meet Esther

by EU GradsFund

Hi, I’m Esther Wong. I was serving as a Howie in 2023-2024, and will continue working with the EU as a Senior Staff in 2025-2026, particularly with the Arts & Social Work faculty!

Would you rather: never hear music again, or never read fiction again?

I would rather never read fiction again! I’ve always been a slow reader, but also, I cannot live without music. I’m thankful to God that I’ve been given a deep appreciation for music, in which I know how to play instruments & sing. Music has been an instrumental part of my life as I’ve grown up in expressing myself and my emotions, as well as being affirmed in the truths of the gospel!

How did you become a Christian?

I grew up going to church and never doubted who God was. However, I wrestled with the assurance of having eternal life after death and thought that I needed to appease God by serving him, after all, he demands our worship. After calling myself a Christian in high school, in year 12, I decided that life would be much easier to do by myself, because it was too hard to please God in his perfect standards. So I turned away and denied that God was the one who needed to be in control of my life. I knew that it was a bad choice, but I also wanted to achieve success on my own. Between finishing year 12 and starting university, God revealed his great mercy to me, by helping the switch to flick on for me about what grace meant. It meant that there was absolutely nothing that I could do, but it was “God’s riches at Christ’s expense” that bought my relationship with him. And so, I turned back to him, knowing that I was saved by grace, through faith to restore my relationship with God, my Heavenly Father.

Why did you join the EU Staff team?

Initially, I joined the EU Staff Team to be trained for 2 years to consider my suitability and conviction as a full-time paid gospel worker. As I worked as a primary school teacher, I was struck that even little children are in need of the hope of knowing our loving Heavenly Father, in the midst of this broken and sinful world. To know that there are many lost souls in need of this hope, it was my desire to be grown in being equipped to lead others to our living hope in Jesus.

Also, the EU was instrumental in growing me in maturity as a student, as I sought to make Jesus my Lord & know him deeply as my Saviour. To know that there was a community of like-minded believers, who sought to build one another up and journey together through the difficulties of life, is something that I am grateful to God for with the community of EUers that seek to live for Christ! I’m thankful for the opportunity to continue on as a Senior Staff, as I study part-time at SMBC, to continue exercising my ministry muscles, while I grow my theology muscles to be equipped for a lifetime of ministry.
