I was a first-year in 2008 the when the EU last ran a ‘festival’ style mission. I remember walking around campus and hearing about all the activities that were happening that year! There were talks from the Bible, debates with the atheist society, and other large scale things, but there were also smaller opportunities like watching a movie and discussing after, or a breakdancing and testimony sharing opportunity.
As a fairly new Christian, I remember being really energised from AnCon about this ‘festival’ idea. This energy, along with a lot of prayer and the confidence in the gospel, helped me when my small group decided to do “milk crate testimony sharing” during one of the days of festival. Each small group was encouraged to do this during festival, and we had planned, practiced and heard lots of testimonies. With the support of my small group, I remember standing and sharing my testimony as many non-Christians walked past and heard how Jesus was at work in my life.
Now, as a first-year Howie, I have the enormous privilege of partnering with the EU in another ‘festival’ style mission. The first object of the EU is “to present students with the Christian Gospel and to lead them to a personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.” Since the beginning of the year students, have been encouraged to pray for three non-Christian friends with whom they can share the gospel.
The EU’s “Is Jesus…?” Festival is holding large “centralised” public talks that engage with apologetic issues, to which students can bring their friends. However, there are also smaller “grassroots” opportunities that students create, which specifically engage with issues or activities that interest their friends. For example, some students have opted with giving a talk, and some hope to use testimony-sharing to keep Christ at the century of each opportunity. Other ideas include a Pokemon Go pilgrimage, a choral workshop that explores the biblical contexts behind what is sung, as well as asking “Is Jesus…Global?” while eating food from many cultures. As well, we are starting each morning with prayer at 8:15am, as we ask our good God to save many lives!
