The formation of go teams has been something euFOCUS has been doing for three semesters now.
A go team is a group of students who gather with the purpose of growing in their confidence and ability for sharing the gospel and helping others to do the same. The intention is to equip students with a ‘go’ mentality in which they can form habits of maximising gospel opportunities that God has placed in their lives and to equip them with basic tools for sharing the gospel and discipling others. These tools and experiences, they can take with them wherever they go in the future!

The way we have formatted the go teams are as groups of 4-8 people who gather for 1 hour of mutual encouragement through reflection, prayer, and training, followed by 1 hour of walk-up. Alongside this, each student does 1-1 coaching with a staff worker as they explore how they can bring what they are learning into their relational context and life situation, as well as thinking about who else they can encourage and equip with the tools they’ve received.
We know the goodness of the gospel and the need for others to receive it, yet we often find ourselves hesitant to share. Go teams provide an opportunity to share with one another openly and honestly about the challenges and obstacles we encounter internally and externally, and then to remember together the work that God is doing through the gospel and practice taking action in dependant trust in God’s power –that we might be fruitful in his work despite our own weaknesses. We go out in the power of God’s Spirit that we might share both his love and truth with all. Even this week during a go team’s walk-up hour I was given the wonderful opportunity to share about Jesus with two international students who had never heard about Jesus! Please pray that there will be opportunities for further engagement with both of these students in the future.

It has been such a joy to see God’s Spirit at work in the lives of our students. Whether it be new believers convicted and excited to grow in sharing what they’ve received, or those who have grown up in the faith but have never had the support or encouragement to realise that they already have everything they need to become disciple-makers and to see them become increasingly bold in sharing their faith and encouraging others. And to see the students also experience this joy of seeing the way God is shaping them, and seeing the fruit it is producing as they step out in faithful trust!
So be encouraged! Maybe you have some brothers or sisters that you could form a little go team with to remind each other how good it is to be able to trust in God’s power to work despite our weakness, and then prayerfully encourage each other to step out in faith :D
