Hope at Easter: Health Faculty Hot Cross Bun Stall at Sydney Uni

During Easter, the scent of toasted hot cross buns filled the Susan Wakil Building, creating space for EUers to meet students lingering between classes.

Chloe had a lovely chat with T*, who attends a Cantonese Bible study at uni. T* shared about her life and said she’s heard of the EU but feels most comfortable exploring the Bible in her heart language—a beautiful reminder of the EU2030 Big Kingdom vision: a multicultural and multilingual community.

Later, Tom and I met four first-year speech pathology students. Two attend an Orthodox church. As we shared stories, I spoke about becoming a Christian from a Buddhist background and what I love about Jesus. They shared what they value in Greek Orthodox traditions. We also introduced them to other Christian “speechies.”

These were brief encounters, but we’re praying God will continue putting Christians in their lives and drawing them closer to Himself.

Sparking Gospel Conversations: What did Con Students do for Easter?

In the week leading up to Easter, a pinboard appeared in the foyer at the Conservatorium. “What are you doing this Easter?” it asked, and within just two days it was covered with hundreds of post-it notes.

The prompting question led to several incidental conversations – one student shared: “One of my mates pointed the board out and I got to share how I’ll be at church because it’s an important day for Christians remember Christs death and resurrection!” Another shared in the faculty-wide group chat that, using the board as a starting point, “I was able to invite a girl named Indiana today to our evangelistic Easter bible talk on Thurs, please pray that she will be able to come!”

At the end of the week, we manned a stall next to the board, asking people about their faith and response to Easter, distributing hot cross buns that a student had handmade, and information about the EU. One particularly fruitful chat took place over a full hour between one EUer and a Jewish-background first year, and ended with them resolving to meet up and read the Bible together!

Easter Public Meetings

In the week before Easter, our EU Public Meetings held evangelistic talks on the topic of ‘Who do you say that Jesus is?” I spoke from Luke 9 and asked people to consider the evidence of the resurrection of Jesus. Having covered the historical evidence, I moved to the Bible, explaining how the central tenet of the death of Jesus is the reality of a cosmic substitution – Jesus in our place. This is concerning propitiation, redemption, justification and reconciliation. I then showed how the resurrection of Jesus demonstrates His power over death, the offer of forgiveness, the giving of the Spirit, and the offer of eternal life. It was encouraging to see a good number of visitors come to EU Pm’s this Easter week. Please be praying as they continue to ponder the meaning of the death and resurrection of Jesus, that they might continue to ask their questions and ultimately place their trust in the risen Jesus.
