Faithful Lawyers, Labourers, Lay Leaders and LRLR Workers — that’s the legacy of the EU. 125 people in one room confirmed it. Men and women flooded The Refectory on October 17th to celebrate 35 years of the Howard Guinness Project — current and past students, past and present Howies and Senior Staff, Board Members, faithful parents and servants, local and overseas ministry workers. We all gathered to hear and celebrate stories of all God has done, and is still doing, through our affectionately named “Howies,” from our 1st Howie in 1991 to our 190th in 2026.

As someone who didn’t attend USYD, nor became a Howie, I’ve been surprised and delighted to hear the stories of its impact. This hasn’t just been during my 3 years as an EU Senior Staff worker, but years prior, as EU students in my church raved about how they loved, respected, and treasured their Howies. The EU’s reputation preceded them, and it is what intrigued me to consider applying as an EU Staffworker in the first place.
Yet it’s one thing to hear of its impact, and another thing entirely to see it embodied in one room. Our Howard Guinness Project 35th Anniversary Dinner was a beautiful testament to the long-term, life-changing impact of the Howie Project. Parents shared how being a Howie equipped them to faithfully teach their kids the gospel. Church workers shared how pastorally caring for EU students impacted how they shepherd their flock in Sydney’s Inner-West. LRLR Workers from Western Sydney and Muslim-majority countries shared how growing as evangelists in the EU envisioned them for a life of gospel-sharing amongst the least reached.

Pastors, Teachers and Evangelists. These are the roles and responsibilities of a Howie that not only impact their lives for 2 years, but for every day that follows.
So what a wonderful vision to share with these 125 guests, and now with you, that the EU is prayerfully seeking to raise a further 40 Howies by 2030. That’s 40 men and women who will be raised up, trained and sent out to serve as Pastors, Teachers and Evangelists in Sydney, Australia and beyond.
This isn’t a self-seeking goal, but a meagre attempt to answer Jesus’ prayer.
“Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.” – Matthew 9:37-38
Don’t you long to see more people raised up for God’s abundant harvest? People to reach the 39,725 International Students at USYD. People to reach the 10 million non-religious people in Australia. People to reach the 3.64 billion people worldwide who have no access to Christians, churches and Bibles.
That’s a big task. What can you, one person, do about it?
You can start by praying, “Lord, send out more labourers into your harvest.” Perhaps pray it daily. Second, you could consider fulfilling that prayer yourself. Would you consider becoming 1 of the 40 Howies we are praying for in the next 4 years? Would you consider sacrificially giving 2 years of the life gifted to you to be trained, equipped and sent out as a Pastor, Teacher and Evangelist at USYD, and then out into your family, workplace and city?
Come join us. We’d love to serve with you.
