Hello! I’m Winnie and I will be joining this year as a new Health Howie!
What is your favourite cuisine?
My favourite cultural cuisine would be Japanese. It has two of my favourite things – noodles and matcha/green-tea! There is so much variety in Japanese food too!
How did you become a Christian?
People often ask how I became a Christian. My immediate family, except for my brother, are non Christian. When I was little, I attended Scripture classes at school and had a kids picture Bible. I remember reading through and thinking, wow! God is so powerful and amazing, but nobody explained to me what that meant for my life, so I continued to live as someone who sought to please others. God continued to work graciously in me and in unexpected ways.
In high school, my older cousin was looking for a place to volunteer at for Duke of Ed requirements and a local church agreed to take him on. The youth minister there would invite him along to the youth group, every time, without fail. My cousin eventually got sick of it and decided that yes, he would go along but he would bring someone else to join him (aka me). So I went along to youth group, and I remember that term, they were looking at the Psalms, and that night, I heard Psalm 23 as the memory verses, that the Lord was MY shepherd and that He was with me in all things. I remember a sense of tremendous peace and wanting to know more about this God. Eventually, through the high school Christian group as well, I came to hear about Jesus’ death and resurrection and what that meant for my life.
He is my Lord and Saviour and it wasn’t by my own efforts that I would please God! That was tremendously life-changing and freeing! Praise God for the work He continues to do in my life and each of ours!
Why did you join the EU Staff team?
I joined the EU as a ministry apprentice as I became convicted of what was most important in life – whether people know God and call Him their Lord and Saviour. I was working full-time as a nurse and when you work with people who are sick and dying, you often become more aware of the frailty of human life. When we have lived this life on earth, what comes next?
As someone who has been graciously saved by Jesus to serve others, I considered how I could be serving other people and one of the ways was to be trained up by doing a ministry apprenticeship. For many of my non-Christian nursing colleagues, this was a completely different change in career trajectory but actually, saving lives for eternity under God’s hand is even more important! I’m super excited to see the ways God will be at work in people’s lives, to see people fall deeper in love of who Jesus is, whether they are already Christian or investigating Jesus for the first time!
