Training the Trainers

by Christine West

“How do I help the pharmacy students understand and model what it means to be a Godly Christian leader?”

“What do the veterinary student small group leaders still need to understand about the gospel to help them teach the bible at a deeper level?”

“What methods should I teach to the student faculty leaders to help them pastorally care for people within their faculties?”.

We all have questions on the job. As a Howie, I frequently have questions concerning theological ideas, pastoral care, ministry opportunities, strategy and partnership with the students.

It would not be enough if the EU Graduates Fund existed only to equip and train students in Christian leadership. An essential aspect of the Graduates Fund ministry is founded on the idea of the trainers being trained. This year, the EU has been blessed with 12 theologically trained senior staff workers, training 19 howies to train 250 students leaders, leading the 900 EU students, reaching the 50,000 university students with the message of Jesus!

Penny Slater, a Howie currently serving with primary education and masters students, shares her experience of being trained firstly to then train others.

“This year I received valuable training from the senior staff in learning how to understand and teach the bible faithfully and accurately. I found this training particularly useful for me as it changed the way I approach leading bible studies. I have since tried to share and articulate the same model to three Primary Education student small group leaders so they too, can lead Christ-centred studies that are tailored to their particular small group.”

By God’s provision through the EUGF, Howies are able to participate in regular training from senior staff, including theological and biblical training, staff team discussions of important issues and practicalities of the ministry, and one-to-one mentoring.

As Paul puts it, “the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses, entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.” (2 Timothy 2:2)
